The Best Rainbow Riches Games

One of the most popular areas of any casino – online or offline – is video slots. It’s one of the simplest but most fun ways to gamble. There are many games to choose from – in fact on the slots floors in Vegas Casinos the rows and rows of games can stretch into the thousands. So, which to play? Well, one of the most iconic and fun brands to try, in particular online, is Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches.

This game has been around for years and has been made into no less than 12 different formats. To help you choose which to play, here is our pick of 5 of the best:

Pots of Gold

The very first Rainbow Riches game was Pots of Gold – a 5 reel game in the online version. It’s a very simple slot to play with 10 paylines on which you must line up identical symbols. There are also wild symbols which substitute for all others on the reels, and 3 bonus rounds which require special symbols to unlock them. The most famous is the Road to Riches round, where the player progresses down a yellow brick road, picking up prizes as they go until the game ends.

Slingo Rainbow Riches

Perhaps one of the most alternative formats is Slingo. This is a kind of mix of bingo and slots, played out on a 5×5 grid, with 10 ‘spins’ per game. The objective is to complete lines of 5 on the grid – a ‘slingo’ to progress up the prize board. You can earn free spins and special symbols like Joker Wilds can substitute in lines for other symbols. If you score 5 slingos in the main game you get to hit the bonus round where traditional Rainbow Riches features like Road to Riches appear.

Free Spins

Most video slots now have a free spins round where players get a set number of auto spins on the reels. Just sit back and watch! You can score up to 999 free spins in this version of Rainbow Riches. Other features of the game that are exciting are the Stacked Symbols – here a reel will be taken up completely with identical symbols to increase your chances of winning. To hit the free spins round you will need to land special ‘bonus’ symbols simultaneously on the reels.

Leapin Leprechauns

This is a different format of Rainbow Riches to the normal slot game. In fact, its more like an instant win scratchcard. Here your leprechaun character is standing on a hill and he must jump onto floating patches of grass to collect prizes. If he lands you get a prize. If he hits an obstacle he falls and you lose. You get 5 jumps per play with a 100x top pay out.

Megaways™

This is a slot game format developed by Big Time Gaming, an Australian game developer. In Megaways™ slots the reels can expand on each spin to up to 7 rows high. With six reels this creates as many as 117,649 ways to win. There is a free spins round which comes with a progressive multiplier that increases by 1x with every win during the round. This pushed up the prize potential making Megaways™ one of the highest paying of all the Rainbow Riches games.

Who Makes Rainbow Riches Games?

The history or Rainbow Riches games is the history of one remarkably successful entertainment business that became synonymous with fruit machines and skill with prizes (SWP) games in pubs, bars and clubs across the UK in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

The name of that company is Barcrest.

This Manchester-based business was formed in 1968 to create the kind of games machines that people could play to win money whilst out with friends and having a drink, or taking a break from the main event of a bingo round or watching a film, or waiting for their take away to be prepared.

Fruit machines became a regular part of UK nightlife partly thanks to Barcrest. Popular titles developed at this time include Card Cash, Cash Counter Chances Unlimited and Super Line Up.

In fact, Barcrest was so successful that they were bought by American gambling operator, International Game Technology (IGT), in 1998. Following this move and with the growth of the internet, Barcrest’s design and development team turned their attention to online slots and casino games. The first fruits of this production line included slots like Monty’s Millions and Money Mad Martians.

In 2006 the iconic Rainbow Riches game was born as a slot machine featuring the now classic bonus rounds of Wishing Wells, Pots of Gold and Roads to Riches. This game has of course gone on to become one of the most recognisable slots in history, with new formats released regularly to feed a hungry audience.

Further games by Barcrest that you might be familiar with include Rob Da Bank, a hugely popular online video slot that features innovative Super Trails and bonus gamble options, and Captain Jackpot’s Cash Ahoy, another well-known slot in the UK market.

The story of Barcrest took another turn in 2011 with IGT sold the business to Scientific Games (SG) for £33 million. As well as producing more versions of Rainbow Riches games, since this transfer Barcrest have created more classic slots including the high RTP game, Ooh Aah Dracula, Cleopatra and Cluedo Slots.

SG themselves have an interesting history in the entertainment market, having developed the innovative Tilt technology for pinball machines after their launch in the 1940s. Scientific were also involved in the home video market in the 1980s before going on to become a leading force in game development for the online gambling industry.

SG also own two other production houses, Bally Technology and Wiliams Interactive (WMS) who both produce high quality online casino games.

SG have offices worldwide, including the UK and Europe.
